Even though she lost the 1972 presidential run, Shirley Chisholm made history as the first African-American woman to seek a major party nomination for President of the United States on the Democratic Slate and became the first black woman in Congress! She impacted society by paving the way for the courage of women and minorities to go into politics, inspired youths to speak for change, and for all to go for what they believed in.
